Who Is Eligible for Medicare?

Medicare is generally available to:

  • Individuals who are 65 or older.
  • Certain individuals younger than 65 with disabilities.
  • Individuals with end-stage renal disease (ERSD).
  • Individuals with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease).

Speak with your agent to discuss eligibility and when to begin the enrollment process.

What Are the Parts of Medicare?

Medicare has different parts that provide various types of coverage. Medicare’s primary benefits—Original Medicare—has two types of coverage:

  • Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance). This coverage helps pays for hospital services (e.g., inpatient hospitalizations, surgeries and similar care).
  • Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance). This coverage helps pay for preventive services, lab services, X-rays, vaccinations and other outpatient expenses.

These benefits are supported primarily by the federal government and payroll taxes and are consistent for all Medicare beneficiaries.

Because individuals have unique health care needs, private insurers offer Medicare-approved benefits that may fill in coverage gaps left by Original Medicare.

These include:

  • Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage). This coverage offers the benefits of Part A and Part B (with limited exceptions). Additionally, it provides expanded benefits such as dental, hearing and vision care. It may also offer prescription drug coverage, making it unnecessary to purchase Medicare Part D.
  • Medicare Part D (Medicare Prescription Drug Benefits). Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) participants without Medicare Advantage (Part C) can purchase Medicare Part D for prescription drug coverage.
  • Medicare Supplemental Insurance (Medigap). This can be purchased to help pay for your share of costs not covered by Original Medicare (Part A and Part B). For example, it may provide coverage for copayments, coinsurance, deductibles, and out-of-network care costs.
